The Twin Cities Chapter welcomes Mike Cravens back for an intense, one day seminar. Mr. Cravens is a highly regarded, national speaker, who has spoken several times to our chapter on several different finishing topics. This year, he will present a follow up to his excellent article in the June 2007, Powder Coating Magazine, “Defects and Rejects: The Ugly Side of the Finishing Business”.
The purpose of this intense training is to provide a foundation for the attendee to understand the technical issues relating to failures and rejects at all stages of the finishing operation – from receiving the parts in, through pretreatment, application, curing, testing, and packaging for delivery. The quality and analytical test methods used to determine the failure mode will be emphasized during the discussion. Real world examples, with question and answer time, will be highlighted throughout the seminar. As a result of this training, the attendee will have the educational background to proactively attack defects and rejects in their own shop.
Mike tailored this seminar for a diverse audience. Painters, shop supervisors, inspectors, sales people, and business owners will all benefit from attending.

By
Chapter President Pat Cullen
MIKE CRAVEN SEMINAR A GREAT SUCCESS
On February 21st,
53 TC Chapter member and industry associates attended a Twin Cities Chapter
sponsored all day seminar entitled
“Identifying and Correcting Defects and Rejects”. The
seminar presenter was Mr. Mike Cravens of Powder Finishing Consultants, Inc.
Mr. Cravens
shared much of his extensive powder finishing experience and gave out a great
deal of information on powder coating
defects, why they are caused and how to eliminate these same defects. The
highlight of the presentation was the showing of
multiple slides of actual real life defects and background discussion on these
specific defect examples.
Each person
attending the seminar will receive a copy of the defect slides that were shown
and discussed. The seminar itself
covered but was not limited to such topics as –
| The “Fish
Bone” problem solving model
| Detailing
that the custom coater’s quotation is indeed a legal document
| Warranty
vs. guarantee for the custom coater
| Extensive discussion on how to handle the Eight Stages of Coating Defects |
Mr. Cravens
summarized his presentation with the statement that “All coatings will fail
over time. There is no such thing as a perfect
paint job.” He also stated that “CCAI and other trade associations and
trade publications hold the key to cost effective learning.”
At the close of the seminar a number of attendees stayed for an additional half
hour or
so to continue in a further Q & A session with Mike Cravens.
Thanks to Chapter Board member Tim Milner for organizing this seminar event.
